Karen Hill is a technical editor and writer with expertise in conservation writing and public education and outreach content. Her 15 years of professional experience reflects her interest in communicating important conservation messages to a variety of audiences.
Karen specializes in translating technical information into an understandable format for a wide variety of audiences. She is known for working with environmental professionals to create conservation plans and strategies for the protection and restoration of wildlife and natural resources.
Writing and Editing
Karen is currently managing the revision of the manual "Mitigating Bird Collisions with Power Lines" for the Avian Power Line Interaction Committee. She is also managing content for the Pandion website and marketing materials.
As a content (or big-picture) editor at Pandion, she has edited manuals, guides, marketing materials, scientific reports, professional papers, websites, curriculum lessons, education and outreach materials, management plans, natural resource inventories, NEPA documentation, and program surveys.
Her writing at Pandion includes educational articles on black bear behavior for the Bear Prepared Communities program newsletter, on springs protection as part of the Santa Fe Springs Working Group's outreach activities, and on the history of land use for the Polk County Environmental Education Curriculum. She has also written administrative and background text for regulatory documents.

In addition to her work with Pandion, Karen has written for the National Wildlife Federation, Defenders of Wildlife, local newspapers, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. For Defenders of Wildlife, she wrote a summary paper on Human Dimensions of Rare Carnivore Recovery based on scientific findings presented at a session of the Carnivores 2004 Conference. She also wrote content on the Florida panther for their website, a brochure, and a media packet.
While serving in a leadership role for The Florida Panther Society, Inc. (as president and vice president), Karen was on the USFWS Florida Panther Recovery Team that recently completed a revision of the Florida Panther Recovery Plan. She was a major contributor to the plan, including the education and outreach portions of the Recovery Action Outline.
For two years, Karen was a nature writer for the "Alachua County Today" newspaper. Her series, "Discovering the Sunshine State’s Backyard," won a first place state-level award for Environmental/Conservation Writing in the Florida Press Association’s 2002 Better Weekly Newspaper Awards.
When Not at Work
Karen’s other interests include hiking and camping in Florida and in the mountains, creative art-play, people-powered tools, weaving, and other handcrafts.
