Apalachicola
NERR Reserve Mobile Education Unit
Florida Department of Environmental Protection
Pandion staff created
a series of curriculum units on estuary education designed to advance
students’ interest
in scientific careers. Units include science-based and public
environmental conflict topics relevant to the Apalachicola area.
To design the units specifically for
Franklin and Gulf counties, Pandion performed
a needs
assessment
of local teachers. Focus groups were used to determine student
and teacher
needs for content, supplemental materials, distribution
methods, and design.
Eight
units were written for grades 3 though
6. Each unit includes educator guidance, classroom activity,
reading passage(s), correlations to the Sunshine State
Standards, and graphic illustrations.
The units will be used with modules
built into a traveling “estuarine education trailer." Pandion
designed specifications for the equipment and supplies to
be
included in these modules. The mobile education
unit will travel to area schools for one to two week periods
