Apalachicola NERR Reserve Mobile Education Unit
Florida Department of Environmental Protection

Pandion staff created a series of curriculum units on estuary education designed to advance students’ interest in scientific careers. Units include science-based and public environmental conflict topics relevant to the Apalachicola area.

To design the units specifically for Franklin and Gulf counties, Pandion performed a needs assessment of local teachers. Focus groups were used to determine student and teacher needs for content, supplemental materials, distribution methods, and design.

Eight units were written for grades 3 though 6. Each unit includes educator guidance, classroom activity, reading passage(s), correlations to the Sunshine State Standards, and graphic illustrations.

The units will be used with modules built into a traveling “estuarine education trailer." Pandion designed specifications for the equipment and supplies to be included in these modules. The mobile education unit will travel to area schools for one to two week periods each semester.
