Silver
Springs Basin Working Group
Florida Department of Environmental
Protection
Pandion coordinates the Silver Springs
Basin Working Group, a public involvement group of agency staff,
interested citizens, business owners, and landowners within the
1200-square mile groundwater basin that contributes to Silver Springs,
one of the world's largest spring systems.
Primary coordination
activities consist of arranging, publicizing, and facilitating
meetings of the Working Group and the Coordinating Committee,
and preparing and circulating project update documents. The Working
Group is performing a participatory watershed assessment of the
spring basin and making recommendations for monitoring and protecting
water quality in the spring.
Additional special social/economic
projects have included preparing educational materials, creating
a workshop to educate elected officials regarding springs protection,
identifying landowner assistance projects, actively pursuing
land
acquisition of key parcels, and working with the Silver River
Museum to host an "Old-Timers Day" to document long-term changes
in the spring and surrounding areas.
Other
tasks include coordination with local comprehensive planning,
and facilitating the development
of a statewide legislative initiative to enhance the protection
of Florida springs.
