John Maresh is a wildlife ecologist at Pandion and is based in our Austin, Texas office. He has 14 years experience in protected species biology and management, including extensive experience at wind resource areas. John specializes in habitat identification and evaluation, presence/absence surveys, avian surveys, and wildlife monitoring.

John is recognized as the leading expert in Black-capped Vireo ecology in Texas and Mexico. He is a recognized authority on Golden-cheeked Warbler biology. He holds a Federal Bird Banding Permit (Master Bander Permit) from the USGS Bird Banding Laboratory. He also holds a BA in Biology and Geography with a minor in Chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin.

John is applying his avian and wildlife expertise on several wind energy projects at Pandion, including conducting preliminary biological site evaluations, endangered/threatened species habitat evaluations and mapping, construction monitoring, and presence/absence and point count surveys.

As a biological consultant in Texas, prior to joining Pandion, John was involved in environmental impact minimization on large wind energy development projects, specifically methodology, research, and experiment design and field evaluation and monitoring for protected species, wildlife, and wetlands. He was also responsible for coordinating with principal developers, subcontractors, and landowners.

John was a biologist with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for nine years, where he researched protected species and helped build and maintain the Texas Natural Diversity Database. John was involved in numerous field research projects covering a wide range of vertebrate and plant species. He was principal investigator on several projects including a statewide Black-capped Vireo survey and an identification and classification system for the Golden-cheeked Warbler and Black-capped Vireo.

John’s other interests include birding and travel, cultural geography, and gardening. John has also occasionally been complimented on his cooking, specializing in “Czech-Tex” cuisine.
